Virtual tour of Kotte – Weherakanda

The best-preserved of the remains of Kotte could be found at Weherakanda in beddegana. This has been situated outside and to the south of the fortified city.

To visit this place, turn left at the Bangalawa Junction (Just past Mission Road) and proceed along this road till you come to the Beddegana Cemetery. Turn sharp left  and turn right into Weherakanda Road. The Stupas of Weherakanda could be found at the very end of this somewhat narrow road.

The atmosphere around reminds one of the grand settings in Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa. Except for a small temple, the grounds remain bare of any constructions. This is a protected site of the Archeological Department.

Two Stupas have been built on a raised platform measuring 97 feet by 58 feet. At one corner, a headstone possibly marks a grave. The picture above shows the remains of Weherakanda, and the one below shows some of the damage caused recently. The style of the stupa indicates it to be tombs for prominent persons.
